Diabetes :
Diabetes type 1 (IDDM)
Also known as Juvenile onset diabetes. There is a sudden onset of this kind of diabetes and it occurs generally in younger age group. Here in this kind of diabetes pancreas is producing little amount of insulin. In this case person is underweight.
Diabetes type 2 (NIDDM)
Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (Adult onset diabetes), is non insulin dependent form. And develops slowly and is usually milder and more stable.
In this case Insulin is produced by the pancreas but it’s action is impaired.
Sometimes this diabetes gets improved if the person is able to lose weight.
There are so many points to remember when you are planning a diet for a diabetic patient (Under the guidance of a dietician/Doctor).
But still there are some points you can kepp in your mind while making a diet for a diabetic.
Points to be considered in planning a diet for a diabetic patient:
1. Daily energy intake must be estimated after considering so many factors like actual weight (desirable) activity level, age, sex.
(There is a lot of calculation while doing this, please do not calculate it yourself).
2. Out of Total calories, 60-70 % calories should come from carbohydrates, 15-20 % from proteins, 15-25 % from fats.
3. There should be proper distribution of carbohydrates total calories in a day’s diet.
4. Complex carbohydrates should be included in the diet instead of simple carbohydrates.
5. High protein diets will be good.
6. Avoid saturated fats like ghee, butter, margarine, coconut oil.Instead use Unsaturated fats like sunflower oil, corn oil, gingelly oil.
7. Diet should be loaded with Vitamins and minerals.
8. There should be 6-7 small meals to avoid Hypoglycemia(Low sugar level in blood).
9. There should be lots of fiber in the diet.
10. Patient should avoid Fasting.
